September at the Library
There are so many things going on this fall at the library we are sending out two newsletters, one for children's events and the other for events for the whole family. National Good Neighbor Day
Thursday, September 28, 5-8 PM
In Celebration of National Good Neighbor Day, on Thursday, September 28th we will have a volunteer fair in the library. There will be food trucks and games for the kids. Many of the organizations that help Ashby residents will be here to let you know how you can help out! Whether you would like to be a Friend to the Council on Aging or a volunteer fireman, the ways you can help make Ashby an even better community will be available to you on that evening. Come and meet neighbors new and old and start your fall off right.
Rethinking the 3Rs
Thursday, September 7th at 6 PM
Are you interested in living more lightly on the earth? Do you want to do the right things when it comes to consumption and waste management, but you are not sure what the right things are? Join Bill Stanwood and Brendan McNeil to discuss why we might want to rethink our assumptions about the 3Rs. Bring your questions and learn more about better managing our consumption.
Homeschoolers Meetup
Tuesday, September 12th from 4 to 6 PM
Are you a homeschooling family? Would you like to meet other local homeschooling families? Join us on September 12th from 4 to 6 PM to meet other homeschoolers. You can meet other folks and share your experiences. If the library can support any of your homeschooling endeavors, we are happy to do what we can to help.

Esperanza Rising

Award-winning Pam Munoz Ryan shares a tale of new beginnings, family bonds, and overcoming hardships in Esperanza Rising. Esperanza Rising is a wonderful book for everyone in grades 4 and up. As we discuss we will enjoy some food inspired by the book. Learn more about the Mexican culture in which the book is set.

We are working to rejuvenate our book club after the pandemic slowdown. At the recommendation of a patron, we decided to use the app BookClub by BookMovement to plan the book club and notify users of upcoming meetings. If you are interested in rejoining or joining the book club for the first time, please consider getting on the list. Use of the app is optional.
Non-Fiction Book Club
The Other Wes More: One Name Two Fates

Join us to discuss this heartbreaking tale of two boys with the same name and wildly different fates. Starting with similar childhoods one went on to become a Rhodes scholar, and now the Governor of Maryland, the other went to prison. This book will stick with you. Please join us!
Constituent Round-Table with Rep. Margaret Scarsdale
Thursday, September 21st 3-4 PM
Representative Margaret Scarsdale will be meeting with constituents at the library. If you wish to discuss a specific bill please email april@margaretscarsdale.com with any relevant materials so the Representative can prepare ahead of time.
Representative Scarsdale can help with things like: SNAP, unemployment claims, RMV issues, and official citations to commemorate momentous occasions. She can also answer questions about legislation, policy priorities, and district-specific issues. She looks forward to meeting every constituent and is proud to be serving you in the State House.

Community Read
That I Found in a Thousand Towns by Dar Williams
Discuss the book with Dar Williams here at the Ashby Free Public Library
Thursday, October 26th at 7 PM.
Inspired by our Libraries Transforming Communities grant, we are going to do a community read of the book What I Found in a Thousand Towns by Dar Williams. This book is a love letter to small towns and gives hope, vision, and concrete examples of the power of building community connections.
We have multiple copies of this book for you to take, keep, and even annotate if you wish. We encourage everyone who takes a copy to join us in discussions and activities around the book.
Dar will be joining us in person to read the book, play some music, and engage us in conversation about rebuilding community here in Ashby. Do not miss out!

Do your kids love Chopped, or the British Bake-Off? we are looking for kids to participate in a fun cooking competition here at the library. It will be fun for the participants and the spectators. We are recruiting contestants now for a fall show.
